Anthill portfolio company ComicFlix eyes untapped consumer segment; to raise $2 m for expansion

January 1, 2019

Looking to tap into US, Japan market

ComicFlix, a start-up which has developed a tech-based solution to convert films into graphics novels, is planning to enter the consumer business.

“There is a huge business opportunity lying untapped. People are looking beyond making albums on birthdays, weddings or any other functions,” Guru Pandian, co-founder, ComicFlix, told BusinessLine.

CSR (corporate social responsibility) videos, college anniversaries, and virtually any video can be converted into a graphics book.

For now, the start-up will focus on the business-to-business market. “The consumer engagement will happen after we consolidate the enterprise business,” he said.

ComicFlix’s solution could convert a full-fledged feature film into a graphic novel within a week.

“Eighty per cent of the work is done by the machine. Placement of text in the graphics and touch-ups to the images will be handled manually,” he said.

Tie-ups with companies

Among the few start-ups selected by the Anthills Ventures for the maiden Media and Entertainment accelerator, ComicFlix is planning to raise $1.5-2 million in Series-A round in the first quarter of the new year. “We have raised only a seed round. We will use the proceeds from Series-A to expand operations to the US and Japan,” said Pandian.

The firm, with a small team of 13 employees, has tied up with around 20 companies for content conversion.

“We are in the process of concluding agreements with top content aggregators and some film production houses,” he said.

The conversion happens both digitally and in print. “It provides a new monetisation avenue for the content owners, while providing a new content option for consumption,” he said.
